"Thunder clap headaches and neck pain"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

Last year I was referred to have an MRI scan done of my head and neck after suffering a sever thunder clap headache. I was referred to see a clinician in orthopaedics (specialises in foot and ankle).

I had my MRI done but I was still experiencing symptoms therefore chased my MRI results. I spoke to the clinician's secretary who confirmed my case had been closed down as no findings on my MRI and a letter will be signed and posted to me. I am concerned that my symptoms remain and that there has been no neurology input giving the specific symptoms I am experiencing!

Hi, Thank you for your response. I will get in touch asap. I would also like to highlight that I have now received my letter from the orthopaedic specialist who requested my MRI.

I was advised by my GP as well as the specialist that I was going for head and neck MRI and have now discovered they only had my neck checked. I have waited almost a year and no further forward in getting any answers in relation to my specific headaches. It is having an impact in many areas of my life as there is certain things I am now unable to do as they trigger the headache.

I take these severe headaches after any type of straining, coughing laughing bending etc I’ve spoke with my GP who agreed that I should have had head and neck MRI, then forwarded onto neurology but the case has been passed back to my GP to re-refer me.

This is really worrying and frustrating due to the time that’s been wasted and I’m now back with my GP with no answers and they have been given the job to now put me back on another huge waiting list.

Icepick/thunderclap headaches after coughing for me are a real concern however there seems to be no urgency from the NHS to have a diagnosis and correct treatment put in place for me.
