"Results came back promptly"

About: Fife Community Services / Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service (RCDS) General practices in Fife

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

A combination of rapid weight loss, poor appetite and general weight loss made me make a GP appointment.  After blood tests my GP discovered abnormalities in my blood and decided to refer me to the hospital for more tests including a CT scan. I then got a call from Mike at the RCDS unit and was a bit surprised and disappointed that my GP did not inform me that the referral was to the cancer unit. Mike did however put me at ease and reassured me that the service was quick and that I would have the results within a few days.

I have to admit I was a bit sceptical but how wrong could I have been. After my CT scan the results came back promptly and I am pleased to say they were clear of cancer. From these tests I have discovered a few other issues with my health but the great news is that I do not have cancer. My only negative observation is that during this process I have had very little feedback or opportunity to discuss the results of the tests with my GP.  On the other hand the staff at the RCDS unit have been brilliant from start to finish.

Dear rcdsal55

My name is Murdina Macdonald and I am the Lead cancer nurse and Professional Lead Nurse for RCDS.

Thank you for taking the time to share your care experience with us.

It sounds like your decision to make a GP appointment due to rapid weight loss and poor appetite was important. It’s understandable that you were surprised and disappointed not to have been informed by your GP that the referral was to the RCDS service. Clear communication about such referrals is crucial for patient understanding and peace of mind. However, it’s positive that Mike was able to reassure you about the process and provide support.

It’s fantastic to hear that your CT scan results came back promptly and were clear of cancer. This must have been a huge relief for you.

It’s also encouraging to know that despite initial scepticism, our service exceeded your expectations. It’s great to hear that our team provided brilliant support from start to finish. I trust their professionalism and care played a significant role in your overall positive experience during what must have been a stressful time.

Moving forward, the RCDS team will ensure clear communication with the patient regarding follow-up procedures. If cancer has been excluded and no further health issues are being explored or treated, the patient will be informed that a follow-up call from their GP is not necessary. This will help streamline communication and provide clarity for patients regarding their ongoing care. If cancer has been ruled out, it’s understandable that your GP may not necessarily follow up on the specific issue. Regarding further follow-up on your health conditions, I can’t provide specific recommendations, as it varies case by case. However, I will certainly share your concerns regarding communication with our lead GP for RCDS. We will work to address this issue.

Warm Regards

Murdina
