"Visit to Accident and Emergency"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My son broke his shoulder. We came here at 8:20pm. He was triaged and X-rayed at approx 9:30/10pm. He was able to provide an x-ray from previous clinic showing the broken humerus.

We were not told anything further. We are still here at 7am with no news about what will happen. He has had his blood pressure taken at 6am.

We will soon be here 12 hours, he is in pain and extremely uncomfortable.

All we wanted was some direction or update, we know it’s not an emergency but tell us that we’ll not be seen until day staff come in at 8am if that’s the case, don’t leave us in a waiting room with no water (vending machines doesn’t work) and other patients who are making us all extremely nervous and frightened -noted that police were patrolling on a regular basis.

I asked 2 nurses at 2am and 5pm if they could tell me what might happen. They both said they’d get back to me and didn’t.

Dear matargy59

My name is Linsey Sheerin, I am the Divisional Nurse responsible for Urgent and Emergency Care at Belfast Adult Emergency Departments. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. From the outset, I wish to sincerely apologise for your poor experience and the delays experienced.

Unfortunately our service remains under sustained pressure and at times demands exceed our capacity. Notwithstanding, this your son should have been offered pain relief and efforts made to communicate and make him more comfortable.

I sincerely hope by this stage your son has now been seen, treated and you are currently at home.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of your son's care with me, please contact PatientExperience@belfasttrust.hscni.net

Linsey
