"Cycling accident and time in hospital"

About: Trauma & Orthopaedics / Major Trauma Unit

(as the patient),

I came off my bike and fractured my left clavicle and parts of my pelvis. I was lying part of the road and cycle lane. We tried to get an ambulance but were told there were none available. A doctor who had stopped, checked that my spine was ok and gave me and my husband a lift to the Mater hospital A&E dept.

I was given some painkillers, x-rayed and my pelvis scanned and after several hours, transferred to the RVH fracture ward. I was on a bed in the corridor for about 12 hours, but after looking at my x-rays Mr Diamond had me transferred to the Major Trauma Unit.

Once there I was cut out of my clothes, put on a drip and given great nursing care. I was discharged 9 days later once I could get out of bed,get myself to the toilet and walk with a crutch.
