I was admitted to Antrim Area Hospital in January 2024 with a bowel obstruction. There were no beds available in the surgical unit and I spent three days in the observation unit in ED. I do not remember much of my care at this point as I have developed delirium. On the third day I was rushed for emergency surgery, my blood pressure dropped during surgery and my oxygen levels dropped. I was admitted to the intensive care unit. My family sat at home trying to get through to the surgical ward to find out if I was out of theatres yet, but there was no answer. Finally my family found out I was in the intensive care unit, they were obviously very distressed by this and moreso as the surgeons had not phoned to say the surgery had gone well but that my body was not reacting well to being sedated. When my family asked the surgeons the next day why they hadn't contacted my next of kin the surgeon said that they should have finished at 18:00 that day but didn't get left until 21:00. I find this appalling, the surgeon took me to theatres and although my care was handed over to the intensitives upon admission to the intensive care unit I feel the surgeons should have informed my family of my admission to the intensive care unit. Apart from this huge oversight on the surgeons part, standard of care from all other professionals was great.
