I attended out of hours GP with a worsening sore throat and had been nervous it would be considered something I shouldn’t attend for. Was seen by two nurse practitioners (sorry can’t recall names) and their care in assessing me and recognising I needed to be passed onto the ENT team as likely had some level of infection/abscess was greatly valued.
At Monklands I was taken to the treatment room for ENT and promptly assessed by one of the FY2 and registrar doctors (sorry again I didn’t catch names). Their specialist care was highly effective and I felt informed and able to decide what level of input was to be delivered with their guidance. Although the treatment room wasn’t the most pleasant experience, a few hours later I was back at home nearly pain free which is a remarkable change to in the morning.
A added stress to my situation was that I was planning to leave on a family holiday the next day and had all sorts of concerns regarding cancellation, or even going despite symptoms and the problem worsening. Both the nurse practitioners and ENT doctors recognised this and were able to factor this within reason into my treatment plan. If abroad I almost certainly wouldn’t have had access to as specialised and personalised care and this makes me all the more grateful for my experience.
