"The advise I felt was not what I expected to hear"

Last Feb I attempted to take my own life. The care from the crisis team was exemplary.

During the year my mental health didn’t improve and I continued to feel increasingly unwell. I have made calls to the crisis team in that time. After Christmas I became very unwell and sh became a coping mechanism.

I called the crisis team again and this time yes I felt listened to but the advise I felt was not what I expected to hear. I was advised to seek marriage counselling. I didn’t feel that was appropriate.

I went into crisis during a very difficult week and called the samitans who I felt listened and did not judge my marriage.

Thanks for this feedback, Sammy. It sounds as if the crisis service has on the whole been helpful and supportive of you. But that the advice you were given during your last contact jarred with you. I am sorry that you felt it was judgemental and that it upset you. It may be that the person you spoke to meant this in a helpful way - as something to consider later down the line when you are not in crisis. Where someone has needed to contact the crisis support team on a few occasions, the mental health professional would want to explore the issues leading to or triggering the crisis to try and understand and/or address the cause. But I am sorry if this felt ill-judged, out of context or simply not relevant. We will pass this feedback onto to the team. Please do not hesitate to contact the crisis team if you need to. We wish you well going forward
