"Bladder Stone"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Urology

(as the patient),

A bladder stone was discovered when I had a scan in June 2021 and I was told that was on a priority list for laser stone fragmentation. Following repeated urinary infections over 2 years, I was finally given a date for the removal on 9 August 2023. After 5 hours wait I was given an x-ray and told that the stone was too large to be removed by laser. A new date was given for 27 September 2023 and an attempt was made to remove the stone by laser but I was told that after 2 hours treatment only 5% of the stone had been removed. A 3rd and final appointment was made to remove the stone by cutting into my abdomen and carrying out 'major surgery'. This was successful.

Dear disgruntledUTI

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns regarding treatment for a bladder stone. I am sorry to read that you waited a long time for your appointments and decisions made on the day of your reviews took several hours. I can see how distressing and frustrating this must have been when suffering from recurrent symptoms.

Obviously clinicians do try and ensure all options are approproriately explored and tried before any invasive surgery and it seems that this was the case in terms of laser therapy. As you say, only 5% of the stone was removed using this method and you had to undergo major surgery to successfully remove the stone. I hope that you are recovering well following this procedure.

To provide look into your situation and see if we could make any improvements, I wonder if you could contact patient affairs?

Telephone 01355 585325 or email PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

I hope to hear from you so that we can learn from feedback.

Kind regards

Lise
