As part of my antenatal care I attended a consultant appointment, of which the purpose was to discuss my plan for the birth of my second baby. This in theory seems to be a good opportunity to raise any anxieties and discuss any queries. However, my experience was the opposite.
The consultant was patronising, rude and seemed in a rush. A few months ago I had a telephone appointment with the same consultant and it lasted all of 5 minutes, with the same rush to get off the phone, with basic facts conveyed.
At our face-to-face appointment the consultant forgot key elements of my options for birth which I had to remind them of. As someone who works with the public myself I was taken aback by the consultant's attitude and was quite emotional after our appointment.
I get the impression that no due consideration was given to the mental health health effects that pregnancy and past birth experiences can have. I hope that other women have a more positive experience, and I have to say that all the midwives I have seen at the centre have been fantastic.
