"We felt looked after and cared for"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology (Ward 32)

(as the patient),

I was due on the ward for treatment for a missed miscarriage, however I had to present to A&E due to concerning signs. I was admitted to Gynaecology after a 6hrs+ overnight wait in A&E.

I was admitted to ward 32, and every single member of staff I met treated me and my partner with the utmost kindness and professionalism. You could see they genuinely cared about us and done everything to make our stay peaceful.

I wish I could remember everyone’s names, but I would like to personally mention Julia who looked after me on the night shift (when most of my miscarriage was happening). She ran about doing absolutely everything in her power to help me. She checked with the other patient in the room and allowed my partner to stay with me past 10pm, whilst I was having my miscarriage. Mentally, I couldn’t have done that on my own, this made the world of difference for me and helped make a really sad and challenging time that bit easier as I had support throughout.

My partner said he was so anxious at the thought of leaving me, until he met Julia and knew I was being looked after well. Julia is an absolute credit to the ward. In addition Kirsty, who spoke me through the baby memory box and looked after me during my recovery, another really lovely nurse who helped to make a difficult time more peaceful.

Before my treatment started, the nurses had to monitor what I was passing when I went to the toilet, however the toilet wasn’t working. So the first couple of times I had to use the toilet in another room and carry the bed pan with me back, past everyone. This is not the nurses fault at all, and they did get me a commode which meant I had more privacy. However due to the sensitive situation I was in, it would have been better to have the toilet working or commode from the start. I found the process quite painful too before the morphine kicked in, and felt a little conscious about the other patient hearing me as we were just separated by a thin curtain.

Overall, although it was a really sad time for me and my partner, we felt looked after and cared for, the team were amazing. Any of the constructive comments, are about the actual structure/facilities of the hospital rather than the team who provided the best care

Dear Gemma1995

I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for offering feedback at such a difficult time.

I am glad to hear that on the whole you and your partner felt supported by the staff and found them kind and professional.

I shall share this with the team - Julia will be pleased to know you both felt supported by her.

I have noted your comments re the toilet situation and will discuss this with the team.

Unfortunately there are few single rooms in the ward area, which I understand is frustrating.

It you need further support this is a helpful website:

I wish you a gentle recovery and I am pleased to hear our great team described as "amazing"!

Kind regards,

Nikki Harvey
