"Discharge with no plan"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Diabetes

(as the patient),

In Glasgow Royal since early in March. Was advised that due to my ongoing vomiting and having Type 1 Diabetes that the safest course of action would be to use an NJ tube. The doctor advised they were just waiting on a date for this to make sure I was getting nutrition.

Ward staff gave me Ensure drinks and Dr put me on Level 3 soups but advised to stick with three or four spoonfuls daily. I did everything I was told to do. My vomiting subsided for less than 24hrs but when the doctor arrived they advised I was being discharged because in their opinion I do not require any further medical input.

I was extremely distressed but was told to stop being angry. I advised I felt I was being sent home to die, as I am not able to keep controlling my blood sugars whilst not eating. My diabetes is very well controlled but I advised the medics that I was scared I was going to hypo and not be able to get through it on a regular basis. I had been hypo many times on Ward 8 and had to be treated by staff. The doctor was not interested in my fears and made it clear it was his opinion that mattered.

I have had this vomiting since November 2023 and have had to be hospitalised several times but this was not given consideration. I tried contacting my diabetes team but very difficult leading up to a bank holiday weekend.

My GP called me in the early evening and advised that, as yet, there was no discharge letter on the system. The hospital was asked if I was being discharged with medication and the reply was no.

I now have no antiemetics to take over the weekend and have to somehow survive with low BM's until 2nd April 2024 when I might get some medication. If I reduce my insulin any further then I will be at serious risk of DKA/death.
