"Prolonged wait for discharge letter"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Maternity care (Ward 31)

(as a service user),

Following the birth of our baby my wife and I were understandably excited to take our little one home. With all necessary checks performed on mum and baby and nil issues identified we were informed that we could go home once we received our discharge letter. However we then waited 5 hours to receive our letter.

Upon asking a member of nursing staff for an update regarding our letter I was informed there was only one doctor working who had been attending to emergencies on labour ward. Personally, I feel this raises greater safety implications that there was only one doctor to cover both maternity and labour ward.

As a result of our unnecessarily prolonged wait, the experience of taking our first child home has not been the experience that we would have wished for.

Dear memberqu38

Congratulations on the birth of your baby, I am very sorry to hear that your experience of our postnatal ward was not as you would have hoped. I feel there may have been a miscommunication from the staff when you were advised there was only one doctor on duty as this is never the case. Both the Maternity ward and Labour ward have a Junior doctor on their rota, but on occasions there is call for both of them to attend emergencies if required. It would appear on the day that you were in ward 31 with your wife there may have been some emergency activity which affected the discharge process and therefore resulted in an unfortunately prolonged wait to go home. We are working towards improving the discharge process as a wider team, in the meantime I would be happy to discuss this further if you would like to contact me at the email below.
