"None of this could have been achieved without the midwives"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I recently gave birth to my daughter in SWAH in Enniskillen. Due to a huge amount of births over a period of a number of days which fell in the days after my due date my planned induction was postponed, however my waters broke spontaneously the next day.

The process of being seen in foetal assessment to confirm waters breaking and the process of then being admitted to the maternity ward was a difficult one. Understandably the ward was incredibly busy but as a woman in early labour, I found this difficult and upsetting having sat in corridors, continuously leaking amniotic fluid over a period of 5 hours.

However, when I was finally given my room my experiences began to get a lot better. I found I was in a substantial amount of pain in the middle of the night and due to visiting rules my partner had gone home so I was alone. I was given paracetamol and told I wasn’t really in labour, it hadn’t even started yet, and it would be a long process, which I found discouraging considering how much pain I knew I was in.

2 hours later I called the night midwife again to ask for help with the pain again, who then called a midwife from labour ward to examine me. From this moment on my entire experience became incredible. The midwife who came from Labour ward was an absolute Angel. She found I was 4, nearly 5cms and took me straight to labour ward and immediately reassured me I had done so well so far and would get pain relief in minutes.

She let me call my partner to come in. She kept me so calm and validated how I felt. She gave me her opinion on how to best progress my labour and best manage my pain at the time and I felt totally confident in her knowledge, opinion and plan for us.

Later her colleague joined us and helped me through my labour, coaching me how to use the gas and air, encouraging me, keeping me in the loop, encouraging my hypnobirthing and supporting my partner too. I felt so confident with these ladies and couldn’t have progressed as quickly or as well without them.

When the shift changed at 8am I had two midwives - I can’t remember their names either, but again both were second to none. My partner explained that I am better when I am informed what is going on and they kept me included in every decision. The student midwife stayed by my side the entire time, encouraging me, reassuring me, it felt like she’d known me my whole life.

I had a natural birth, with no complications at all and a healthy baby at the end. I know none of this could have been achieved without the 4 midwives in labour ward who cared for me, my partner and my baby. We are so incredibly grateful.

Good Evening Mjoe95,

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter and thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

I am sorry that your admission process was difficult and upsetting and I apologise for the delay you had in your care. Unfortunately at times when the unit is busy, delays in planned procedures and admissions can occur. Please feel free to contact me, if you would like to discuss this further, as we always strive to improve our care and learn from any feedback you have.

I am delighted to hear that when you were admitted to labour ward, that you felt well supported by the Midwives and Student Midwife who cared for you. It is always lovely for staff to hear that the care they provide has been so well received.

I will ensure to share your comments with the wider Maternity team.

I would like to take this opportunity to send you and your family my very best wishes.

Kind Regards

Ali Ferguson

Congratulations Mjoe95 on the birth of your baby. We as a department are delighted for you and your partner. I would also like to thank you sincerely for taking the time to write into care Opinion to share your experiences. I hope you are settling well into your new family life.

I do appreciate that Maternity had a significant increase in activity recently which put additional pressures on the immediate availability of allocated in-patient beds for new admissions. I am so sorry there was a delay for you to be allocated your own allocated room. It would not have been of the intension of any staff to cause you any unnecessary distress while you awaited this bed and remained in the waiting area during this time.

I note you feel that having your partner remain with you would have been more beneficial in your early labour experience. However I will take your feedback under review for consideration of your suggestion to amend, in the belief that would have supported you better with your early labour period. Getting into established labour can be a challenging time for many woman and I sense that had the midwife explained this to you in more detail you may have been better prepared for the different stages of change and pain relief offered. I apologise that this did not happen and I will address this with all staff to ensure that they communicate for woman to have informed information in relation to this.

It seems you did progress very well given the detail of your feedback and I am delighted for you that you also found the care provided to be excellent. I will ensure that the midwives involved are advised of this. Thank you for this on their behalf.

I wish you and your family every happiness and best health in your family’s future. Perhaps we will be fortunate to serve you again in the future.

Take Care
