"Receptionist did not respect privacy"

About: Sidwell Street Clinic / Exeter Sexual Health

(as the patient),

There were four people standing around the reception desk staring at me and she asked me my full name which I gave for an appointment at the GUM clinic.

Then she asked for my address and my date of birth as well despite this being confirmed on the phone. I felt humiliated. I was clearly very stressed and unhappy.

I said I wasn't going to do that as I had already confirmed it beforehand on the phone and I wasn't prepared to disclose any more of my private information for the group to hear. I was ready to walk out.

I think it's disgraceful and humiliating and I won't be going to that clinic again.

People should also not be hanging around the receptionist area but the receptionist should have been aware of it. I'm not even comfortable that they heard my name in that clinic and I know for a fact a lot of other people would feel the same way.

Dear Honestreview

I am the admin lead for the Sexual Heath team. Firstly, please let me say thank you for the feedback you've provided here. Patient feedback is very important to us as a service. I am really sorry to hear that you felt humiliated and unhappy when you were checking in for your appointment, that is certainly not what we would wish for.

We take patient confidentiality very seriously, and to that effect when accessing any patient records we need to check we are speaking to the correct person. We do this by checking three identifiers whilst a patient is present.

I appreciate that you may have found this frustrating if you had only recently booked your appointment and provided the same details. Please can I assure you that our rationale is that we want to continue to keep your records safe.

I understand that the reception area can sometime be busy. Please can I assure you that the reception team do their upmost to capture this information in a discreet manner. I am sorry if on this occasion this wasn’t the case.

Following your feedback, we are going to discuss this in our next team meeting to see if there are any changes we can make to improve the checking in experience, without compromising the safety of ensuring we have the correct patient for the appointment.

Once again can I thank you for taking the time to leave feedback.

Kind regards

Colette
