"Early miscarriage support"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I’ve had two early losses and have attended Rubislaw.

All staff have generally been incredible, supportive and really informative.  Have been seen by lots of lovely midwifes, HCSW and doctors but not sure of names.

Out all the positives there was one experience I was incredibly disappointed with. I called up and was told to hold the line so the midwife could discuss my care with her colleague. I wasn't put on hold and could hear the whole conversation between the two, where they had spoken about how I shouldn't have been offered an appointment for bloods by a midwife over night (the staff member was named) as this wasn't protocol. The other member of staff then followed this by asking what I was phoning for and indicated I wouldn’t be getting seen. I truly was only asking for advice/reassurance, and it was made out as though I was phoning expecting to be seen that day, and made to feel like a nuisance. The type of person I am I wouldn’t phone unless I genuinely was worried, but this put me off phoning with any further worries for over a week and ended up paying privately and I’m glad I did as I have now required further monitoring for having ectopic pregnancy risks.

It sounds really small but it was really hurtful given how much reassurance is given re phoning with any concerns, so to hear that's how staff might speak about your care is really disheartening. But honestly that's a very very small issue. In the grand scheme of things, Rubislaw have been absolutely excellent and all the staff I have met in person has only ever treated us with compassion and respect. But maybe just a heads up to make sure patients cant over hear insensitive conversations.

Thank you Rainbow97, for feeding back on your experience of care within Rubislaw ward.

I am glad you have felt the majority of your care, and the health professionals you have met, have been supportive. I apologise for what happened when you called the ward for support and advice. Insensitive conversations, like the one you have described, should not be taking place whether patients can overhear them or not.

You should never have been made to feel as a nuicance or feel discouraged to contact our ward for advice and support, and I apoligise for this.

I will be sharing your feedback with the team and their line managers, however if you would like me to speak to the staff members involved to give direct feedback then if you could please contact us through our feedback service, I would be happy to follow this up.
