I was diagnosed with Haemochromatosis last year. This required the removal of 32 pints of blood by venesection over a period of 10 months. As an individual who has a great fear of needles from childhood (probably just short of a phobia), I found that the staff in the unit were very compassionate and considerate in dealing with my disposition. A lot of patience with a very nervous patient-sorry for the pun!
I will need to attend the unit every four months or so for monitoring and maintenance of my genetic condition but do not feel fearful about it as I know that I will be very well treated by everyone. Many thanks to all the nurses who carried out the procedures and also to the support and administrative staff who always made me feel welcome. Our NHS service is superb and should be protected and supported!
