"Cellulitis and Lymphoedema"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

My story started really about a year ago when I was admitted to hospital with swollen legs and they put it down as heart failure and pumped me full of medicines which is what I was on when discharged a week later.

Recently I had a car accident in which I wrote my car off and at the time the leg swelling began again with me having no feeling in my legs from the knees down. My legs and feet are constantly cold as if I am standing in a bucket of ice. I attended three hospitals A&E departments Monklands, Wishaw General and Hairmyres. I was put on a course of antibiotics and the chemist prescribed anti histamines. At the same time I came across oilatum shower gel to help with the itching and the Aqueous Calamine Cream to help with itching and also T-Gel shampoo for my hair (it has cost me a fortune) as I have been buying these things.

The last doctor at A&E Hairmyres said after a ct scan of my legs that they want to put me back on the first medication I had but when I contacted my GP they said they want me to continue with what I am on.

I was back at my GP even more recently with two lumps in my groin. Results are they are lymph glands inflammation and I was told that they would stay like this for a month or two due to the cellulitis.

Not once has any doctor said they would refer me to a specialist in Lymphoedema care to get support and direction in how to treat and live with this condition. I have since found a specialist that I have self referred and I await the outcome.

I feel very let down by my GP dealing with this matter as their response on last visit was asking me what I expected them to do. I found them abrupt and rude.

Feeling very let down by the healthcare received.

Dear phoenixxd99,

Thank you for sharing your experience of your GP.

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling let down by your experience with your GP especially when you have had several problems going on and are looking for support.

GP’s are independent contractors and are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about the service; they are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion. Can I please invite you to contact the Practice Manager if you would like a direct response about the service?
