"Post-op care"

About: Woodend Hospital / Elective Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Firstly, can I say NHS Grampian are, on the whole and at every level, caring and professional, a service we in the North East are  proud of. However after my recent knee replacement in Woodened Hospital, where there was plenty staff and nothing too much trouble to help us the patients, two members of staff were less than professional throughout my care.

One nurse on the ward and drug round wasn't very supportive when I queried the medication they had provided for me was half the dose I was  taking before my op. They grudgingly went and asked duty doc too re prescribe. This happened on more than one occasion. The same member of staff also refused to remove a piece of equipment attached to my lower leg to aid my knee bend/ flex, to allow me to get to the toilet, stating it wasn't their responsibility, it needed a Physio, they weren't touching it, and off they went! Thankfully it was almost shift change, so I waited for night staff who removed it immediately, and reattached with no problem.

A Physio assigned to myself had a bit of an attitude when my response to their question of what was my flex I replied that I didn't know what they meant, which was met with a facial grimace and sigh. I was attached to equipment I mentioned earlier for the best part of 2 days and nights because my flex wasn't correct.

I was discharged after the statutory stair climb and exercise routine in place, and during this time the physio said they'd only read my records the day before and my flex pre admission was only 60. Bad practice to not have read notes, wouldn't you agree?

I wouldn't ordinarily use a service of this kind, but I was encouraged to do so by a local Health Professional to raise some awareness positive and negative. I'm glad I've shared my experiences and hopefully save some other soul going through the same or similar.

Finally well done on the food front, well balanced, nutritious meals served with good humour and lots of laughs!

Dear Judedyce,

thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience, I have shared your feedback with the team for their consideration. I am sorry you were met with some attitude and the Senior Charge Nurses will look into this with the physio's.

Kind Regards

Alison
