My mum was admitted into ED through the night after fall down a communal set of stairs and cutting open her lower leg/shin area.
The wound is so bad you can visibly see the muscle and parts of the shin bone.
My mother was discharged with having no anti biotic treatment while an inpatient and no anti biotic treatment to take at home. She received no analgesia on discharge and was given a very bare minimum wound dressing & supply which only included a few packets of sterile gauze.
We have been advised to attend plastics clinic in 3 days' time for a review, which as a staff nurse myself I find shocking. When I collected her from ED I had requested to speak to any nurse or doctor regarding my mother's care and the concerns I had, I was told this was not possible.
Having sourced a second opinion from a consultant from another health board, I was advised that at least 5 days on oral anti biotic cover should be standard practice and also that the wound treatment applied to my mother's wound did not meet a standard protocol to enhance healing and promote skin graft.
As a staff nurse who works in the NHS, I am appalled at this level of care and lack of treatment.
