"Parking"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I travelled from Perth to Ninewells for a 10am appointment.  I had left home just after 8am in order to deal with the traffic in Perth at that time of the morning.  I arrived at Ninewells around 9:20, which I thought would easily get me to my appointment on time.  I had to phone the department I was going to around 9:55 to explain that I was still looking for a parking space.

After 50 mins waiting to park I arrived at my appointment at 10:10 (10 minutes late). I hate being late for things, especially NHS appointments, I arrived there  angry and agitated, and I was going for tests for my resting heart rate!  Boy, did that help!  Seems counterintuitive to make all the clinic appointments around the same time and expect people to find parking.

Dear Oscar736

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about the car parking at Ninewells Hospital. I am sorry to hear that despite leaving ample time to find a space, it took considerable time on the day of your Cardiology resting heart rate test, which meant you were unfortunately late for your appointment.

NHS Tayside offers free parking in line with the Scottish Government directive and operates one of the largest car parks within Scotland, with 2383 spaces available within the Ninewells Hospital site. The car parks at Ninewells Hospital can experience pressure at peak times, which is a similar situation as experienced at most large acute hospitals, and we have strict parking arrangements in place to make best use of the space and manage car parking effectively for patients, visitors and staff.

There is dedicated short-stay parking specifically for patients and visitors close to the entrances to the hospital, in car parks 5, 6 and 7, East Block car park and the Renal Unit car park. This allows a consistent turnover of spaces with a recent analysis showing that a space within a short stay patient and visitor car park is used on average four times a day. There are also dedicated patient/visitor drop-off areas close to the main entrance.

Long-stay parking is also available for staff, patients and visitors within car parks 1, 2, 9 and the multi-storey (car park 8).

In an effort to reduce the volume of vehicles coming onto the site we actively encourage patients, visitors and staff to consider alternative options such as public transport, cycling, walking or being dropped off by a relative or friend, if that is possible for them. Ninewells is very well served by local buses and has a bus terminus at the main entrance, which was developed in partnership with Dundee City Council.

We work with public transport providers to encourage alternatives to car journeys and we are in the process of reviewing the staff Liftshare scheme across each of our localities and finalising our active travel strategy.

NHS Tayside will continue to engage with local authorities, other NHS Boards and travel planning and public transport organisations to help support access to our hospital facilities.

I hope the above provides reassurance that NHS Tayside continues to work proactively to effectively manage parking on the Ninewells site.

With best wishes

Billy Alexander

Associate Director of Facilities
