"Made hospital much more comfortable for us as a family"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Play Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in feb of 2019. We were heartbroken and not sure how or what to do.  She had a few rounds of chemotherapy which in the begining wasn't too bad, but the last treatment took its toll on her. She spent a lot of time In bed. She then had an operation at the end and that had a few complications afterwards. But all the staff at the hospital were amazing with our family.

Once she had her operation she was in ICU for a few weeks then later transferred to ward 4, to finish off her recovery. This is where we met Emily from the play team. She helped a lot, bringing things to play with when she couldn't leave the bed or even taking her in the cot to the play room to play.  This was great for us as a family. It meant if I was later at getting into hospital Emily was there to keep her company and play with her until I arrived.

She would come sit with her while I went for lunch. Being 50miles from home with not many family able to help, this was great for us. It made hospital much more comfortable for us as a family.

We still need to visit every 6 months for MRI's and everytime we are going my daughter always asks for Emily or if she will be coming in with her. She's made a big impression on a little girl.

There's lots of story's I could tell about the play sessions she did with Emily, and she absolutely loved every minute of them.

Dear Arix24,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your story. I am sorry that you and your family have been through such a lot in the last few years.

I am glad that Emily was able to make your daughter's stay in hospital a little better and happy that Emily made such an impression on your daughter.

I have passed your comments onto Emily and I am sure she will look forward to the next time your daughter visits the hospital.

Kind regards

Margaret McEwan
