"Painful sigmoidoscopy"

About: Warwick Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

My sigmoidoscopy was done at Warwick Hospital. The person doing the procedure certainly had no bedside manner. They put a tube in my backside for the scope to pass through with all the care and finesse of someone putting in underground pipework. This made me jump a few inches off the bed! They then put the scope in. The pain was excruciating. I asked for the gas and air but it made no difference. I yelled for them to stop.

Because I have diverticulosis they had a problem in moving the scope up and as a result it bent back on itself (I have only just discovered this). At no point did they tell me what they were about to do and afterwards did not explain what had caused me the pain.

I will never have another one and if I have to it will have to be done under a general anaesthetic. The worst experience of my life to be sure.
