"Amazing care"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Alexandra Hospital / Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Royal Alexandra Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 21-23)

(as a relative),

My husband took seriously ill at home with what started as cellulitis, but quickly turned into strep A invasive sepsis. But thanks to the wonderful team in A&E. Nurse practitioner triaged and immediately wheeled into resus and contacted the orthopaedics team. The care he received, you couldn't even pay for it on this level.

He was took to ICU and again, the care was out of this world. Special mention to the staff member there who said it was their job but they done so much more. I think the nhs does have problems, but for us, critical care was the best in the world. Because of these wonderful doctors and nurses, my children still have their dad.

Unfortunately the care did diminish when admitted to ward 21, where on the nightshift important IV antibiotics were missed more than once. But one nurse there was the exception, that person is a angel on earth, the level of compassion and care not to mention knowledge is 1st class. This nurse is what keeps the faith in nhs alive. They actually arranged a shift swap to make sure my husband received the care he deserved.

I must say the orthopaedic consultants in the RAH are a special bunch. My family could never repay them. I wanted to write this as you see so many negative posts regarding nhs. However we were extremely lucky to have such a service. Every member of staff we met, from caretakers to top consultants did a wonderful job in what is a very stretched challenging environment. Any delays and problems are often not the front line staff's fault so I feel they don't deserve to be disrespected. Myself and my family will always be NHS supporters. Thank you again.

Dear Lynne26

Thank you for sharing yours and your Husband’s experience on Care Opinion. It’s truly appreciated that you recognised the positive as well as the negative components.

From A&E perspective, I have displayed your post in our staff rest area with confidence that those involved see it.

I have already taken the opportunity to share your comments with my colleagues in ICU and Orthopaedics. Both are ensuring to pass your post to their respective teams, whilst sharing learning and recognition from what went well and what could have been done better.

Your heartfelt words around your children still having “their Dad” is truly humbling.

Again, thank you so much for taking the time at what must have been a frightening period for the whole family.

Best wishes and hoping your Husband’s recovery continues.

Gerry
