"They won't allow me to take part in her care"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Special care baby unit

(as a carer),

Been a second parent for my baby niece for the last 8 weeks as her dad isn’t on the scene. Baby has been transferred here temporarily and now they won’t allow me to take part in her care and I've been told that the second parent can’t be a female.

I have supported my sister and my niece for the last 8 weeks and am now being isolated from them by this hospital who have said I’m a nominated visitor and not allowed to be classed as a parent, meaning I can’t hold / touch the baby I’ve been feeding/holding for the last 8 weeks, including the first week of her being transferred.

Dear TeebEw

Thank you for your time in highlighting this to us. I am disappointed to hear that this is the information you have been given. Working in partnership with families is hugely important to us. Family Integrated Care is the philosophy that should guide how we provide care in our neonatal units in GGC. We recognise the importance of integrating the primary carers as part of our neonatal team. This supports building of a strong relationship with the baby and builds confidence that facilitates a smoother transition to home. I would like to reassure you that we do not have a policy that says a second parent can’t be female - in most circumstances the parent will decide who is the nominated second caregiver.

I would appreciate if you would be willing to discuss this further with me to allow me to gain greater insight in to the situation to try and identify where, on this occasion, our philosophy of family integrated care has not been in accordance with our practise.
