In late 2023 I had the misfortune to suffer a second stroke, the first occurring four and a half years ago.
Follow-up action by a home visit from the District Stroke Nurse persuaded me to attend a series of eight meetings with an Occupational Therapist ( Sarah) and Helen a Stroke Nurse. My initial reaction was that this was not for me!
In total seventeen stroke survivors attended, an eclectic mix, and after a couple of weeks I became aware that we experienced similar issues in the wake of our strokes.
I thought that Sarah fully understood the issues we had and presented the course material in a sympathetic and professional way, ably supported by Helen.
The first few weeks placed great emphasis on meditation techniques largely concentrating on "belly breathing and mindfulness" and I found this process slow to develop beyond inducing a meditative state of mind. However, as the weeks progressed the group bonded and conversed freely and it became apparent that we all appeared to have adopted a positive approach to the course. My attitude changed from cynical to enthusiastic.
I'm acutely aware of current NHS funding issues, however it is my belief that one week towards the end of the course should be set aside to enable spouses & sweethearts to at least listen-in to our conversations when we discuss the legacy symptoms of our illness. Issues like over caring, under caring, fatigue and the many other changes that have occurred since our stroke. For those who take the trouble to attend, I believe it could provide valuable insight into lives that have suddenly changed.
In closing I wish to express my gratitude to Sarah, Helen and the peer support volunteers. I can say with certainty their efforts have helped me.
I would be grateful if after reading this you could pass it on to:
