"Created a friendly relaxing atmosphere"

About: Glasgow Dental Hospital and School / Paediatric Dentistry - Level 5

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter had to have 2 of her adult molars removed due to hypomineralisation. She is extremely anxious about attending the dentist. We were referred for this to be done with gas and air.

We were treated by John. When we first met him for trial sedation he immediately put my daughter at ease, he created a friendly relaxing atmosphere with his star projector and by allowing her to chose the music. He explained exactly what would happen during the procedure in a fun way that she really warmed to.

When we attended on the day of the extraction, he remembered her and chatted away about all the things she had told him at the previous appointment, this really put her at ease. He took his time and was in absolutely no rush when she needed extra numbing. After the procedure he gave her stickers and Pokémon cards.

He turned what was a frightening procedure for both of us into something else, so much so that my daughter even said she was looking forward to seeing him again when she was going back for the second extraction.

John really is a treasure to the NHS, he has just the right personality and nature to do the (not very pleasant) job he does.

Dear Debbiedo,

Thank you for taking time to feedback on your daughters visits to our department of Paediatric Dentistry. I do hope that she is recovering well.

Molar extraction can be a challenging experience for many children. I expect this must have been an anxious time for both of you. Explaining what to expect during a procedure often helps patients feel less anxious and your daughters seems to have been carefully supported by John through her treatment journey.

I am delighted that your daughter was so keen to come back for a further appointment, that’s all the thanks we need. John and the team will be thrilled to read your very kind comments.

Very best wishes,

Fiona
