"First-rate treatment"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Cardiology

(as a service user),

The treatment I received from Paul was first-rate. From his examination he was able to reassure me on a concern about a possible heart issue. He related well to me, empathising with the long term cough I was experiencing. He also demonstrated a more advanced feature of the scanning system that I had a particular interest in. Thank you, Paul.

One possible area for improvement is the wording of the Cardiology notice in the waiting area. There is one aspect that I found ambiguous, and as I waited, I noted that those arriving after me also seemed a little uncertain on how to respond to it.

It is an unattended waiting area. The signage suggests that people should hand their documents to a member of staff. This creates uncertainty. Should one enter the Cardiology area to find a staff member? It's not clear. As you are waiting you wonder if you will be unattended if you have not done this.

In practice, the staff member who will handle your appointment will ultimately emerge and call your name. So this is a redundant message and creates unnecessary concern. Something saying to please take a seat and await being called would reflect practice and settle patients. Thank You.

Dear Heartened24

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent examination. I am pleased to hear that Paul was able to provide reassurance and demonstrate the particular scanning feature that you were interested in.

Your comments regarding the waiting room sign are very helpful. We will indeed review and update the signage as you have clearly explained that the message is confusing and unhelpful. Taking the time to provide such detailed feedback, helps us to make improvements in areas that may not be recognised by those working in an area each day. Thank you again for your suggestions.

I will pass your feedback on to Paul and will discuss plans to update the information in the waiting area.

Kind regards

Lise
