"Dirty"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary

I visited A&E today after suffering horrible chest pains in the hope that I would be given some reassurance it was nothing serious. Well after two hours I couldn't stand it any longer and had to leave. The staff were rude and unhelpful. Their was an old lady in by herself in the waiting room and she had to ask another patient to get her some tissue as her nose was bleeding everywhere. The staff just left her. The place is physically dirty. I could see the surfaces had been wiped with a dirty cloth after seeing black smears all over the place. Blood on the floors. I was taken 'through the back' via a triage room that had blood on the bed to go and get some bloods taken, the man who did the bloods didn't wear gloves and after leaving the room I was told to sit in the smallest most cramped waiting room with 50+ people sat waiting for a doctor. The room smelt dirty. There were people being sick everywhere, now I understand people are ill but come on put them in a side room. So yes after two hours I left, still with my chest pains. Came home and took an antibacterial shower as I left feeling as disgusting as the department.

Hi my name is Catherine and part of my role is responding to posts on Care Opinion.

I am very sorry to hear of your experience following your chest pains, this is not the care we aim to provide and I would like to apologise for your poor experience.

I am disappointed to hear your comments about cleanliness and hygiene in the department, this certainly is not the standard we strive to acheive.

Winter pressures, including increased attendances and admissions, are affecting many acute hospitals across the country. This, along with staffing pressures in a number of specialties, has had a negative effect on the service we are able to provide.

So that we can look into the issues you have raised I would encourage you to contact our Patient Experience Service (PALS) on 01274 364810 or by emailing patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk.

We, as a Trust, value all feedback, positive or negative, as a way to drive improvements to our services.

Thank you again for raising your concerns.

Kind regards

Catherine Healy
