I took part in a charity mountain marathon and as a result lost three toe nails.
They grew back but one kept giving me problems on left first toe as it became ingrown.
This may sound trivial but is extremely painful and debilitating, especially when on feet a lot.
I tried to manage myself unsuccessfully and it became nasty and infected and very limiting in shoes I could wear
A chance meeting with a NHS GGC podiatrist in my walking group advised me and gave me self-referral phone number.
I had delayed seeking attention as I thought needed a GP referral.
The phone number was active till 8 pm which was really helpful as very busy lifestyle.
One call and I had an appointment for treatment within 10 days.
I attended Podiatry at QEUH and it was a delight to meet qualified podiatrists supervising students.
My nail was treated and 6 months of pain and discomfort alleviated and healed within 10 days.
As they suspected the nail re grew in and was treated again at a follow-up appointment I had been given.
At this point it was advised I had nail ablated so would not ingrow again.
I attended recently and had procedure.
The staff were excellent, made me feel at ease, were kind, caring and efficient with no wait.
I got home with a dressing and clear instructions with every stage of procedure and recovery explained.
I had 9 months of problems pre finding this self-referral number that impacted on exercise, sleep, comfort footwear and holidays.
3 appointments for treatment and I am sorted. Only a 2 month wait for the removal procedure. Thank you, GGC Podiatry service.
"The staff were excellent"
