"Outstanding in their care and understanding"

About: Occupational Therapy / Occupational Therapy - Neurology Outpatient Physiotherapy Services / Physiotherapy Neurology Outpatients

(as a carer),

My husband had a cerebral haemorrhage in 2023. He was in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy for 5 weeks and discharged in the care of our GP who referred him to PRI for physiotherapy.

The neuro-physiotherapist quickly picked up that he had difficulty sequencing and processing and suggested additional therapy from the PRI neuro-occupational therapist. Both therapists (Louise and Lois) were outstanding in their care and understanding, observations, insights and suggestions. They also showed patience and respect when it became apparent that there was more going on for him than the impact of the stroke and Lois suggested we discuss this with our GP. He in turn has confirmed that my husband does not have dementia, but is living with long-term personality-related anxiety and brain ageing with resultant size reduction of the hippocampus - memory loss, emotional outbursts, and spatial difficulties.

The time spent with Louise and Lois was invaluable in eliminating the impact of the stroke as a cause of his ongoing distress. He/we now know what his challenges are and are able to concentrate on accepting his condition and focusing on what he can do with his life in retirement.

Dear Rosie1,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about our service. I am glad you felt we addressed the needs of your husband, both in terms of physical improvement, and offering strategies and support with memory, sequencing and emotional wellbeing.

With the GP involvement, hopefully your husband will be offered ongoing support for his anxiety and minimise further distress.

Thank you for your kind words - I will ensure they are passed to the team and all involved. As discussed at discharge - if you or your husband's symptoms change and you feel neuro physiotherapy would be of benefit, please use your self-referral or contact the department.

Kind Regards,

Louise
