"Felt very judged and not accepted"

About: Community Mental Health / Move Ahead - Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Service

(as the patient),

My support worker was very judgemental towards addiction and made their position very clear that they think those addicted to drugs get themselves into that situation. I’ve never felt so judged and unaccepted by a healthcare professional. All I wanted was to access my community and feel like I belonged and the very person who promised me that made me feel so little and worse than I did when I first came across the service.

I had not disclosed my addiction to them as I felt I hadn’t built that trust with them, but we ended up discussing addiction about someone else that we saw and mutually knew. They also mentioned how hard working people get no help or handouts whilst drug addicts get everything handed to them on a plate. That told me everything I needed to know about them and made me realise I didn’t need that service anymore. It would have been nice to be able to disclose my addiction issues and get some help with that too but their behaviour made that impossible.

Dear Phoenixds84,

My name is Pam Lamond and I am the Senior Charge Nurse for MoveAhead.

I am extremely sorry to hear about your experience of your support worker at MoveAhead. You must have felt very distressed and upset experiencing such a judgemental attitude. This attitude is not acceptable and clearly has had a very negative impact on your wellbeing and trust in professionals.

I would like to offer you support and discuss your experience further so that I can ensure learning from your situation.

If you can contact me on pam.lamond@nhs.scot we can arrange a time to discuss your experience. If you would prefer me to call you please contact Cairnwell on 01738 413070 leaving your contact details.

Please accept my sincere apologies and be reassured I am very keen to discuss this very upsetting experience further and if there is any support we can put in place going forward.
