My support worker was very judgemental towards addiction and made their position very clear that they think those addicted to drugs get themselves into that situation. I’ve never felt so judged and unaccepted by a healthcare professional. All I wanted was to access my community and feel like I belonged and the very person who promised me that made me feel so little and worse than I did when I first came across the service.
I had not disclosed my addiction to them as I felt I hadn’t built that trust with them, but we ended up discussing addiction about someone else that we saw and mutually knew. They also mentioned how hard working people get no help or handouts whilst drug addicts get everything handed to them on a plate. That told me everything I needed to know about them and made me realise I didn’t need that service anymore. It would have been nice to be able to disclose my addiction issues and get some help with that too but their behaviour made that impossible.
