"I witnessed a number of errors"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was an inpatient at Wishaw General.  There was an agency nurse on night shift who only agreed to care for 4 patients, leaving the nurse who was caring for me with 12.

I also witnessed a number of errors being made including medication errors and the wrong patient being put on nil by mouth for an operation.  Clearly this resulted in tensions between the staff as this staff member was asking questions in relation patients without having consulted their notes.

A patient who required care and repositioning had this carried out by other nurses whilst the agency nurse looked on.  They had to be advised of other errors by members of nursing staff. As an onlooker, it seemed to me that having this person there was more of a liability than an asset to the other night staff.

Dear hip fracture,

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion of University Hospital Wishaw, Trauma and Orthopaedics.

I am so sorry to hear about your experience and the disappointing care you witnessed from the nurse. This is certainly not the patient centred care that we strive to deliver. In order to allow us to look into this much further, please could I ask that you contact Patient Affairs at University Hospital Wishaw, who's details I have included below. They will be able to investigate further and provide you with a personal response.

I hope you are recovering well from your procedure.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
