"Mother's care lacking"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C2 Maternity care

(as the patient),

Was took in for an emergency c section. I can't fault the surgeon, he was great. A comment was made by another staff member during the section about me. Presumably thought I was too out of it to hear.

I was really sick after the section in the recovery room. Was shaking violently. Could only keep toast down on the 3rd attempt. Started to come around after that but I was still feeling dizzy, sick and shaky. Was told I was being moved to the ward which was grand. And the nurse said baby was going to be handed to me to hold on the bed while I was being wheeled around and i asked could baby be moved in his cot as I was still feeling so bad and didn't trust myself to hold him. The nurse said OK and went away. When they came back an older nurse came in and basically told me I was holding baby on the way around to the ward. So I did. So much for listening to mum's wishes.

Once in ward I was basically left to fend for myself. Apart from I think it was student nurses coming around doing the vital checks on you. No help to go to the toilet, no help to have a shower. I asked a nurse to help me with putting my stockings back on after the shower the next day and it seemed like a big deal. Done it myself. Every time I went to the toilet there was 4 or 5 nurses who seemed to be just sitting at the desk having a chat. Baby wasn't feeding great and they did help with that but as for the mothers care, I think it was lacking.

Dear branfm94,

Thankyou for taking the time to complete this feedback on the Care Opinion platform. I am both saddened and disappointed to hear the description of care that has been provided for you. This falls below the level of care that I would expect for anyone accessing our maternity services. We have specific guidance in place for example as you have explained, for safe transfer of babies. However, this is guidance and there are always exceptions to this. As you rightly mention, working in partnership with women and listening to women's wishes is what we would wish to achieve.

I would be keen to reach out to you to discuss your care further so that I can identify learning to use to further improve our service.

If you were happy to do so, please do get in touch with me via email or my telephone number detailed below.

Thankyou again for taking the time to send this feedback.

Kind Regards,

Louisa Lapworth Interim Lead Midwife
