I had an inguinal hernia operation a number of years ago. About 12 months later developed what was told was an umbilical hernia. Told by the surgeon that done the inguinal operation this was due to my weight, and they refused to operate until I lost 3stone. After being fobbed off for the next few years I decided to go private.
The private consultant informed me that they wouldn’t operate due to the hernia in fact being an incisional hernia and not an umbilical... i.e their opinion is that it was as a result of the previous op. They also stated that the hernia was now too big to be cost efficient for private treatment, which really has left me in a dark place.
I am self employed, this is affecting my work. I have a young family, this is really affecting my home life. I am at a loss. I had a date for surgery but it got cancelled and rescheduled. This is not my issue though, the consultant I am with now is great. My grievance is with the previous treatment and operation which has turned what should have been a routine procedure into a major operation resulting in potential higher risks, longer recovery and a massive scar.
The physical and emotional turmoil and the length of time this has taken is a disgrace. I was willing to pay private and now can’t even do that. What’s worse is I have emailed NHS Ayrshire & Arran twice about how this has made me feel, and not even had a response.
