I am over 80 years old and was holidaying in India when I fell, breaking my right hip. A full hip replacement was considered the appropriate treatment. Surprisingly I was allowed to fly back within 4 days of the surgery - a journey totalling about 24 hours door to door - which resulted in oedema of both legs.
I was assessed by the nurse practitioner from my local surgery within two days, by which time the oedema had started to recede, and I was referred to the care team.
I have had the most excellent, prompt and courteous help from the District Nurses, who removed the staples and returned a second time to check when I was uneasy about the healing of the scar.
I have also had two visits from the Physiotherapist, Adam, who has assessed my needs, given me exercises, checked my progress and referred me to the Orthotics clinic to correct an imbalance in my leg lengths.
Overall I cannot praise the team highly enough. Within 4 weeks of the surgery I am now able to walk and shower unaided, climb stairs, go shopping and hope to start driving today.
