"I was made to feel at ease and the all staff were very helpful"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

My Appointment was early in the morning and I wore my MR BUMP t-shirt as this was the third time I was having treatment at University Hospital Wishaw in the last 6 months.

I was greeted by a friendly receptionist at the Day Surgery unit at Wishaw General Hospital. I was then led to a bed and advised, that all going well, that my surgery would be first on the list.

I was made to feel at ease and felt the all staff were very helpful, supportive and knowledgeable. While preparing for the surgery I had visits from the anaesthetic and surgical staff, along with a visit from the consultant performing the operation. All was explained to me, including possible complication and risks. Everybody was so friendly and this helped me relax.

I was then wheeled through to theatre where I was checked and had a

cannula attached. Then into Theatre where all the staff were again so friendly. After inhaling Oxygen for a few minutes, I had anaesthetic administered. I then drifted off to sleep.

The next thing I knew was coming around in recovery area and felt really good and not even in much pain. I was the wheeled to the day surgery recovery ward. The staff there were great at monitoring my recovery and keeping me fed and hydrated. Think I spent around four hours there as it suited me fine to get out around 3:30. I must have drank around 10 cups of tea. plus 3 or 4 cups of water in the hope it would get me to pass water.

I did eventually need the toilet but think most of the tea was still inside me LOL. Had visits from aesthetic staff and my consultant and he explained what they had managed to do and said he would see me in three months

Couldn't get much of a phone or internet signal in the ward but that didn't matter as it was nice to talk to other patients in adjoining beds. Staff did provide phone to call my daughter so no problem arranging lift to her home for 24 hour post operative care.

Very thorough discharge procedure with the nurse going through all the paperwork and explaining what I should do to help my recovery. She met my daughter and granddaughter and brought them along to me and arranged a wheelchair to get down to the car which was allowed to park at the hospital entrance.

All in all it was actually a pleasant experience as I was surrounded by friendly and cheerful staff from the moment I walked in to when I was wheeled out by my granddaughter.  Just over 24 hours later and I feel really quite good.  Just going to take things easy but nice to walk granddaughter to school this morning.  A huge thanks to all the staff at the Day surgery unit and feel so much better now.
