"They guided us through an awful day with compassion"

About: Gynaecology / Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic Gynaecology / Gynaecology Assessment Unit Gynaecology / Obstetric & Gynaecology Ultrasound

(as a service user),

We discovered at a 12 week scan that my pregnancy was 'non-continuing'. Rebecca the sonographer was calm, collected but so calm when she told us. Her kindness made bad news just a little more bearable.

Days later I experienced very heavy bleeding with the miscarriage and needed emergency admission. When I phoned the Early Pregnancy Assessment Centre, Morven the nurse was reassuring and calm whilst arranging for help and explaining to me exactly what I needed to do to get to hospital. She also explained what she thought was happening and why I needed admission. I was alone at home when I phoned and I think I would have found it hard to stay calm if she hadn't been so reassuring.

I was cared for by the Gynaecology Assessment Unit, by nurses Rachel and Jess and by Dr Rachel. Every single one of them guided us through an awful day with compassion, professionalism and care. I understand the unit was very busy that day, but as a patient I felt I experienced excellent care regardless of this, and in a timely manner. Dr Rachel made sure we had time to ask the many questions we had before I was discharged.

I am so grateful for the calmness and kindness of everyone throughout this process. If anyone had even slightly made me feel like I was being overly dramatic or like I was being a bother, I would have added shame and guilt to my emotional burden. If anyone had displayed panic, I would have freaked out. Thank you to them all for fixing me and for supporting us emotionally through this process.

Dear blackcurrantcheesecake

I wish to offer my deepest condolences for the recent loss of your baby. I am honoured and very thankful to you for sharing your experience during this time within our maternity and gynaecology service. It is heartwarming to know in times of such grief, our teams supported both you and your family to ease some of the pain and reduce any personal concerns or worries you had, to allow you time to focus on your emotional wellbeing and ensure you had time and space to grieve with dignity, with further access to available support as you wished.

I will be honoured to share this with our teams, your feedback is dearly appreciated by our service, to offer assurances we are providing individualised, women and family centred care for everyone, and to understand we were able to offer this for you, will forever be our greatest fulfillment as a service.

I trully wish you and your family all the very best in the future

Warm wishes

Steph Gardiner
