Last week my mother had cause to dial 999 due to a continued problem with atrial fibrillation and chest pain. Unfortunately over the last year or so its not unusual for her to need to be assessed urgently.
The crew that arrived (within 20 minutes of her calling) were fantastic! When I arrived to be there they had her hooked up to the defibrillator and were performing an ECG and monitoring her heart rate. They had chatted with her and made her feel at ease and she appeared relaxed and stated that she felt safe now that they were here.My mother isn't always the easiest patient in the world but they offered appropriate reassurances and allowed her time to make choices about her care going forward. They contacted the team at ARI and were able to advise my mother in a way that was clear and understandable. Ultimately my mother chose not to be transported for blood tests (with the reasoning that she was unlikely to have any change to medication over the weekend) as she didn't want to spend another weekend in hospital. The paramedics were professional in telling her her options and my mother happily signed the document stating she had refused conveyance to ARI.I didn't catch their names but saw from their uniforms that one lady was a newly qualified paramedic and the other a student technician. I want to pass on our thanks for their caring and compassionate treatment and reassure them that my mother has been able to see her GP today. Sometimes this site shows the negative side of how people feel about their care and I feel it is important to offer praise and thanks when we see an excellent job being done.
