"Urgent hospital visit"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Surgery Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

Became very unwell around with sudden onset of D&V multiple times and pain in lower right hand side and shoulder tip.

An ambulance was called as kept passing out and the ambulance staff were fantastic and came quickly after 111 phoned for emergency ambulance.

Arrived at hospital at 5am and had general obs done and was sent for a scan and told that the surgical team would see me ASAP from 10am.

After the scan, I was put back in A&E corridor and given more pain relief, however there was no update on what was happening after hours and a family member had to ask staff, which was just told they were working in a different base so couldn’t help, finally a doctor from a different base gave us an update and I was seen by a surgeon at 5pm (7 hours to see surgeon).

The surgeon was checking for appendicitis and was told that it was more likely gastroenteritis and they were going to give me fluids through IV and then be sent home to recover.

A few minutes after this, a nurse came in and went to take out my IV. I queried this and said that I was to be given fluids first and all they said was the doctors have changed their minds and there was no explanation of why. The nurse took out the IV and lowered the side of my bed and walked off.

There was no chance to ask any questions in relation to pain medication as I had had morphine so didn’t know when I could take next dose of painkillers.

I feel like this experience, especially the last part, fell short of NHS Lothian’s core values.

Another note is when I was in A&E . I was given morphine and anti-sickness but there were occasions that the nurses didn’t check my name or DOB before giving me the morphine or anti sickness.

Dear violetjg68,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I was disappointed to learn that there was such a delay in having received a review from the surgical team and would like to offer my sincere apologies for this. I understand how difficult this must have been for you.

I note that you have been provided the details of the Patient Experience Team, however, should you wish to discuss your experience and to allow me to better understand the reason for the delay in surgical review, I would be very happy to discuss this with you. I can be contacted on 01312423479

I hope that you are recovering well

With best wishes,

Shaun
