My son was at the GP who thought he had quinsy so phoned the children's ward to have him looked at by ENT. On arrival it was a busy waiting area and my son had to lay with his head on a table. When we were taken through to the assessment area he lay dawn then he vomited all over himself. I had to ask a nurse for help and they supplied a theatre gown for him to wear. I had to then ask for a blanket as he was in just his pants and the gown. The nurse then came in and said they were going to do the routine swabs, they took the throat swabs from the front of his cheeks. I thought this was odd. Then the covid swab they only did the front of his cheeks again and didn't do up his nose.
We were then left, which I get, as the ward was busy. The nurse came back and we did a fluid challenge after he had some anti sickness. They took his observations and his temp was high, they gave him calpol. We were then left for a few hours then a different nurse came back to do his observations and his temp was even higher so they took the blanket off him and left him lying on a bed with no sheet and no covers. A student doctor came in, took his history and had a look at him. The reg doctor came in and kept saying it was gastric. Throughout them being in the room they were constantly answering their phone. I feel really let down by the service, my boy was still very poorly for a week after.
I then phoned my GP to have him referred to ENT to be told they found nothing wrong with my son. To be perfectly honest I feel the care he got was absolutely diabolical and very very outdated care regarding his very high temperature.
I know feel I will never want to have my son in there or anyone I know have their child there. I felt it was a disgraceful service in the children's ward at the Victoria hospital in Kirkcaldy.
