"Improving my low self-esteem and learning how to love myself again"

About: Community Mental Health / Adult Psychological Therapies

(as the patient),

I have been suffering from a severe depression and a low self-esteem that was caused by a domestic abusive relationship that I was involved in in the past and also some experiences that happened in my childhood. This traumatic experiences made me feel totally worthless. I mistakenly believed in my abuser words that "I did not deserve love", not from others or myself as well. I feel like I have stopped loving myself and my core believes about me and my self-worth were very negative. I also had very poor anger and stress management. I was referred to a Psychological therapy after seeing my GP as I felt that I needed to do something in order to start living a happy life again as I was very miserable. My therapy with a psychologist was amazing. I cannot express how much it has helped me to overcoming my mental issues.

After 20 weeks of the therapy my self esteem has grown massively and I have managed to get rid of all the negative thoughts that I had about myself. I have learnt about self care and how to love myself again. I learned the techniques that helps me to challenge my negative thoughts and also the strategies that helped me to break a vicious cycle of depression. I feel much better about myself now and I am a happier person all together.

My family and friends can see a difference in me as well. My perspective of how I look at myself now has changed dramatically, I went from blaming myself, feeling guilt and like I am not enough all the time to actually appreciating my qualities and lowering my high self expectations to ones that are actually achievable and realistic. My psychological therapy was something that changed my life and I am very happy that I attended all the sessions and actually took on board all the advice and tips given by my psychologist. I am planning on taking advantage of the self-help resources now in order to continue my journey into improving my wellbeing and the quality of life.
