"My A&E experience"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I visited the A&E department with vomiting and extreme pain. I was left in the waiting room in excess of 10 hours before being assessed by a doctor.

When I was eventually moved through to a cubicle to be seen by a doctor, I asked to speak to a nurse in regards to my concerns and pain level.

I was met by a nurse who I found rude and abrupt, they informed me they were in charge of the department and I was not classed as a priority patient.

I was told there was nothing they could do to help me, if I wanted help I would just have to wait longer to see a doctor and offered no pain relief.

Overall, the staff within the department looked miserable to be at work and to have to work in such miserable conditions and under such leadership.

I hope I never have to visit A&E again in a time of crisis.

Dear Johjd98,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Emergency Department.

I am sorry to hear about the long wait you had to be triaged. When you are in pain it certainly won't help you to feel better to have a long wait and then have a nurse be rude and abrupt with you. This is certainly not the level of care we aim to deliver. Our emergency departments are under extreme pressure at the moment and staff are working as best they can to see patients as quickly as they can, this does not excuse the unacceptable attitude from staff however.

We always want to make things better for patients and it would be helpful if you could contact Patient Affairs at University Hospital Wishaw on the below details who can look into this fully and provide a personal response.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
