I'm approaching my 70th birthday, and I recently slipped on black ice and fell. I fractured my left wrist on one side and cracked it on the other, also hurting my right hip.
I was taken by ambulance to Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, by two wonderful paramedics. Reassuring, friendly and professional.
At Paisley Alexandra my bone was manipulated into place and put into plaster. Again every member of staff was reassuring, friendly and professional.
Unfortunately, overnight, my arm began to swell. I was in a lot of pain. Having never experienced this before, I was also frightened.
My husband called the number on the Paisley Hospital fracture clinic advice leaflet. Arrangements were made for us to go, immediately, to the fracture clinic at our local hospital (Inverclyde Hospital).
I was taken immediately to the plaster room to have my cast trimmed and split to allow space for the swelling.
My husband had to call again the next day. We were again told to go straight to Inverclyde Royal Fracture Clinic. I didn't have to wait at all. The clinic door was opened immediately and I was taken straight to the plaster room. The swelling had worsened and the original cast had to come off and be replaced with a temporary one to allow the swelling to settle and reduce.
During this time, I was a frequent visitor to the X-ray department where, again I met only wonderful, kind and caring people.
A permanent cast was fitted and I hope to have it removed in March.
That's the basic story, now for the hard part. How can I tell you in mere words about how wonderful every member of the Inverclyde fracture clinic was?
You hear people saying that to some staff in the NHS the job is just that: a job. Over the past two weeks I met only angels of mercy. People who cared not only about doing a good job but about the patient, the hurting and frightened person.
If I was to sum my experience up in a few words, I would say that these wonderful people could not have cared for their mum or grannie better than they cared for me at a very vulnerable point in my life.
Thank you all
"Wonderful, kind and caring people"
