"Getting an appointment"

About: General practices in Dumfries and Galloway

(as the patient),

I contacted my practice to make an appointment for a skin condition that was bleeding and painful.

It first of all took me 45 mins to get through and the member of staff on reception asked if it was urgent due to only taking urgent appointments at this time. I replied no, but I required to be seen as soon as possible please.

I was informed that at present there was no appointments and they would hopefully be  releasing some in approx two weeks but that was not for definite. And went on to state that I needed to call back then and see if there was anything available at that time.

A friend had asked me to make an appointment at the same time due to the waiting time to get through, which was urgent, and when I asked for an urgent appointment for them, I was informed there was no appointments left for that particular day and they only released so many every morning at 8am and I would need to contact every morning at that time to join the queue, but there was no guarantee of this and therefore try every day till they got one.

I am very seldom in need of medical treatment from my practice and I find it really unacceptable that if you do require some help it is not available. This seems to be a very common story from this practice when you listen to the local people and perhaps this needs to be looked into as a matter of urgency.

Dear Touranga

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I am sorry to hear you had difficulty getting an appointment for you and your friend.

GP Practices are independent contractors and as such, they manage patient feedback within their practices and have their own complaints procedure. Therefore should you wish to raise this matter further, the best next step would be to speak with the relevant practice directly. If you need support engaging with the practice, the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS) can assist you to provide your feedback. Their service is independent, confidential and free. More information on PASS can be found at https://pass-scotland.org.uk/.

I hope that the above is helpful.

Kindest regards

Emma Murphy
