"Care I received as a patient before and during admission for hip replacement surgery"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Elective Orthopaedics (Ward 7) University Hospital Hairmyres / Pre Operative Assessment University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5)

(as the patient),

I want to commend all of the staff  I met during my journey from being told I needed hip replacement surgery to attending the pre-assessment unit, undergoing surgery and subsequent aftercare for same.

All of the staff were helpful and kind. Kindness matters so much in circumstances where a patient is vulnerable. I was worried about the operation, not the actual operation but the before and after.

One of the anaesthetists - a trainee, I think -  talked me through what was going to happen and put me at ease.  She and the rest of the anaesthetic team were very good at calming me and looking after me.

We then proceeded through to the operating theatre, where staff introduced themselves and did there best to put me at ease.  The consultant and his team did a wonderful job.  I awoke in less pain than before the operation  and even after all painkillers etc wore off this remained true. He did a wonderful job and my scar is the neatest I have ever seen.

The recovery nurses were also very caring and reassuring.  Ward staff were the same. They provided me with a pressure reducing mattress and gave me my medication as prescribed when I asked.

Overall the care I received from each and every member of staff I came into contact with was excellent - from the receptionist who took my name when I arrived for admission, to the porters, the domestic staff ,through to  the nurses, doctors and ancillary staff such as the physios and OTs.

Thank you to all staff in the pre-assessment unit, theatre staff, ward seven staff and all ancillary staff who cared for me.

Dear falconwe88

Thank you for taking the time to share such positive feedback regarding your pre assessment, surgical and post operative care following your hip replacement. Your detailed comments on how various staff have supported you through this process will be much appreciated by staff involved. Your comments will be widely shared with the different teams.

Waiting for surgery can be an anxious time as well as having the surgery itself. It is good to know that your pain has eased and that your scar is neat.

I hope that you continue to progress well through your journey of recovery. Thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards to you

Lise
