"ARI - ruptured cyst"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology Services

(as a service user),

After being referred to gynaecology department from local GP as an emergency we arrived After before 7pm I was put into the waiting room and wasn't seen till about 9/10 in which I had a general check up and vitals checked etc., with the decisions to get bloods and consultant to get scans.

We were then seen after 12am in which I had received bloods and told the consultant would be on way up. About 2am we were put to a room by a lovely nurse that they needed back for 7am. The junior doctor came in about 4 and said I had two options I can either come back in for 10 and be a day case or stay and she could be another 3/4 hours. I chose to go home and come back in for 10 as they needed the bed back for 7 and I was exhausted, sore and frustrated.

I was told at the beginign of my appointment also that my Obs would be monitored and not once were they done again and only the nurse came past to check on me. I asked the doctor if there was any way we could go to Elgin he said I should receive a call about 10 with the decision. we got home at about 5 and got very little sleep. we hadn't received a call till nearer 11 and headed to Aberdeen as we were told to go to Aberdeen if we didn’t hear.

We got to Aberdeen and received a call in which we declined as was already in Aberdeen. we then got to the ward the same as last nigh (gynaecology) and was told I had to go to a different ward (women’s clinic) When we got there I got my vitals done and the nurse again I could not fault however was then told the consultant was stuck on the ward it was the same excuse as the night before.

I started to think that she was the only consultant in the hospital at this point. when eventually seen and scans done. the nurse making sure i was ok throughout and kept me comfortable. the consultant was talking to a male member of staff that I wasn’t introduced to and they had found free fluid likely from a cyst. After multiple mentions from the consultant through the appointment about contraceptives and me repeatedly saying that I had tried and not wanting to try anymore. my other option is to wait 2 years... YES 2 years for a laparoscopy.

I got sent home with painkillers and told to ride it out. I could barely stand or walk and spent quite a bit of time in bed once we eventually got home. I understand the NHS is under a lot of pressure however there is duty of care to be had. the fact that they didn’t investigate further even though this is the 2nd time this has occurred with the same outcome, treatment and respect.

Last time they wanted me back in stupid early after sending me home again at 4 in the morning in which I couldn’t get transport back down they scanned me a week after the incident happened in which the cyst had burst again. They could of offered me to stay the night . out of both these times I was in horrific amounts of pain and told to go home take medication and ride it out. there was no duty of care and the fact that I am in my early 20's now it is concerning the amount of pain etc. I was in. I am upset, frustrated and hurt with the amount of care given. Again, I understand the NHS is under a lot of strain but we waited a total of nearly 20 hours that’s not including travel time and time we were home.
