"Play-based Kids Anxiety Support"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Play Services

(as a service user),

Our daughter was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 6 and had an unexpectedly bad anxiety response to regular blood tests. This caused her - and us - a lot of distress both in and out of the hospital, with the tests weighing on her mind constantly and affecting her behaviour and outlook on her treatment. The blood taking itself could take in excess of 20-25 mins. Clear evidence of mental and physical distress.

However after only one session of 30 mins support (she's had 2 now and will probably only need 3 visits) she was in and out of the blood taking in 5 mins. She also looks forward to the hospital, finds it interesting and has completely changed her perspective. I was probably a bit sceptical of what could be achieved but it has been a game changer. Meghan at the RHCYP has been fantastic from start to finish.

Dear lmcn6,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post the above story. I am sorry that your daughter had a bad anxiety response to previous bloods but I am glad that Meghan from the Procedural Anxiety Team was able to provide support and change the way your daughter views her hospital visits.

I have passed on your comments to Meghan and she is also grateful that you took the time to post such positive feedback.

Kind regards

Margaret McEwan
