"Broken kneecap"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted to QMC Nottingham after falling over and shattering my kneecap. I was in a corridor for around 16 hours, I was told I was being sent home to wait for an op. At this point I was in excruciating pain and couldn’t move, a member of staff told me I was going home after my partner left me to go home for a small break.

They then began to get other members of the team. They said this injury can be nursed at home. I asked how is that duty of care? They said my personal details out loud in front of people and said I am an able bodied woman. The nurse wheeled me into the corridor, made me get up and see if I could walk.

I couldn’t even move my leg the slightest. The pain was excruciating and they kept pushing me to move, they held my leg and was moving it, even though I asked them to stop as I couldn’t do it.

I eventually, with my partner's help, got onto another bed. He had to pull me up the bed.

The member of staff then said guess we have to find a bed!

I was transferred to Ear, Nose and Throat ward for a week for a shattered kneecap.

I had the operation, and after 7 days I was moved to orthopaedic, finally was given the correct pain medication.

Once I was told I was leaving I was moved whilst asleep right up to the bay.

And then nurses pushed 4 beds on one side of the bay and I had to stay in the bed all day due to not having space to get out.

There was a patient out next to me sharing the safe curtain. They tried to put a catheter into them without any screens etc as they were sharing my curtain!!

Shocking, absolutely shocking !!!

Dear Lisa,

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback with us and for telling us about your personal experience.

This is not something we want to hear has happened within our hospitals and would like the opportunity to look into this.

Please could you get in touch with me regarding this matter via the email address PALS@nuh.nhs.uk so that I can progress these concerns further.

Kind regards,

Kelly - Patient experience officer.
