"Breast lump which I didn’t feel"

About: Plastic Surgery & Burns / Breast Reconstruction Specialist Nurse Service

(as a service user),

I was recalled after a mammogram in my 70's. I went for another mammogram then waited 2 weeks for biopsy. When I went for results I was told by the doctor I had a DCIS and needed to have a mastectomy and it would be done within a month. I was in shock and the nurse there said I should find out about all the options available. I then waited a few weeks and saw a breast reconstruction doctor who was very helpful in explaining all about breast reconstruction but thought I should see someone else about a lumpectomy. When I saw the doctor I was told that wasn’t an option so I then waited another 3 weeks and saw doctor about an implant. That was the route I chose to go on and the consultant was very encouraging as by this time a few months after initial diagnosis I was extremely anxious and not coping well. He and the three specialist breast nurses were kind and very caring and took me through all the stages of the operation and recovery and what to expect and what I should do eg medication, showering and exercising. I had the nurses phone numbers and email addresses to contact them if I had any questions. I did email a couple of times but even knowing they were there was a big help. One of the nurses came to see me in the ward after the operation and went through a booklet with me.

I am waiting now for follow up appointment with the consultant.

In my case I’d to wait for various appointments and I became very anxious but I have to say the care I received from the consultant and the specialist breast nurses once the course of treatment was chosen was second to none.
