"GP's diagnosis"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

Started in 2015, with groin pain. Went to my GP. Was told sciatica, sent for x-ray (x-ray ok).

Groin pain never went away, self medicating. Referred myself to podiatry to see if that would help the pain. Went to a chiropractor to see if they could help and generally lived with the pain because I thought nothing could be done for sciatica.

Start of 2023 could not stand the pain anymore went back to GP. Told sciatica again, given more pain killers and referred to physio, waited 7 months for appointment.

First time I saw the physio they thought osteoarthritis in my hip. I was shocked, sent for x-ray. X-ray came back severe deterioration in my hip, bone on bone, Oxford hip score came back at 16 out of 60. Physio has referred me but tells me months before I see consultant and up to 3 years for an operation.

I feel if I had been correctly diagnosed at the beginning I would be a lot further on in the waiting list.

My quality of life is severely impacted, I struggle to walk, dress myself, do shopping, I cannot stand for long at work and over the last 3-4 months my hip pain has got worse. I am only in my 50s, so feel a hip replacement would give me my life back.

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with us and I'm very sorry that you have been in pain for so long without resolution.

I understand that your main issue is the progression of your diagnosis with your GP.

GP practices operate independently and have their own feedback, comments and complaints systems and unfortunately, I don’t have any way of forwarding your Care Opinion post directly to them. I would therefore encourage you to get in touch with your GP’s practice manager directly. It is important that they are aware of what has happened in order to feed back to you and consider how this issue could be resolved.

If that is something you might find difficult to do there is an independent service called PASS (Patient Advice and Support Service) who can help you to give feedback, raise concerns or make a complaint about any health service, including GP practices. It is free and entirely confidential. You can contact PASS on 0800 917 2127 or visit their website at Patient Advice & Support Service | Citizens Advice Scotland (cas.org.uk).

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Kind regards,

Lucy Dorrian, Patient Experience Public Involvement Manager.
